Equivalent to a 22-story building, the Statue of Liberty, which holds a torch in one hand and a tablet of law with the American Independence date on the other, is a “Symbol of Freedom” for the American people. It was the tallest structure in the city in 1886 when it was first built, and even today, it remains the most recognizable monument in the state.

Now, you can see the statue from several places in New York, including the Brooklyn Bridge. But if you want a closer look at the huge monument, you should take the designated ferry to the island.

2. New York Public Library

One of the most notable landmarks in New York is definitely the New York Public Library. With over 127 years of history, more than 92 branches, and an expansive collection of over 53 million items, the library is the second largest in the US and the fourth largest in the world.

Three of the library’s branches, including the main branch in Manhattan, recognizable by its lion statues, patience and fortitude, located on either side of the entrance, are located in the New York Metropolitan Area.

The other two branches are in the Bronx and Staten Island.

Being one of the oldest providers of free books, information, and education for all New Yorkers for more than a century, the library was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

3. Empire State Building

Empire State Building

If you are ever in New York, the Empire State Building is a must-visit. The 102-story architectural marvel is an office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Construction for the skyscraper started in the 1920s when New York was at its peak, and cities around the world were racing to build the tallest building ever.

And indeed, the Empire State Building did achieve the feat it was built for. Towering at 1,250 feet in the heart of Manhattan, it held the record for the tallest building in the world for 40 years, losing the title to the World Trade Center.

Today, the Empire State Building is a historic New York City landmark and is still the world’s most famous office building, even being called “America’s Favorite Architecture”. It’s no surprise that visiting this amazing building is one of the top places to visit in New York.

4. One World Trade Center

One World Trade Cente

The events of 9/11 still ring dear in many Americans’ hearts. And the location where the Twin Towers once stood in New York remains one of the most visited places in the city.

The One World Trade Center now stands as the main building of the rebuilt WTC complex. The tower, along with the other architecture making up the World Trade Center, has replaced the Twin Towers. The building took over a decade to build and stands as tall as the original World Trade Center, but is topped with a 1776-foot spire, thought to be borrowed from the Statue of Liberty.

The skyscraper, which offers 360-degree views of Manhattan, Long Island, New York Harbor and New Jersey from the One World Observatory, has endeared itself as one of the most outstanding architectural marvels in the Manhattan skyline.

It is a remembrance of what was lost as well as a modern-day architectural wonder in its own right.

5. Central Park

Despite being only the fifth largest park in New York, Central Park is arguably the city’s most famous public park, receiving over 42 million visitors yearly.

So, why is it so popular?

For one, it is a masterpiece of landscape architecture, designed more than a century and a half ago to offer city dwellers an escape to the countryside. Located in the center of Manhattan, Central Park also has several incredible attractions for those who visit.

If you are ever in Manhattan, you can stop by Central Park to enjoy a walk, cycle, or carriage ride through the intertwining pathways within the park. You can check out attractions like the Central Park Zoo, the Reservoir, the Belvedere Castle, and Strawberry Fields. In the winter, you can lace up and enjoy skating at Wollman Rink.

The best part about the park is that most attractions are free, which is great if you are looking for fun ways to pass the time without a budget. Other notable parks in New York include Battery Park, Hudson River Park, and Bryant Park.

6.  Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal

You have not experienced New York City to the fullest if you have not visited Grand Central Terminal, “the largest train station in the world”. Also known as “Grand Central Station”, after its predecessor, or simply Grand Central, the railway terminus serves the Northern Areas of the New York Metropolitan Areas and features the Harlem, New Haven, and Hudson Rail Lines.

It ranks as one of the world’s 10 most visited tourist attractions, with over 20 million visitors in 2018, without counting the subway and train passengers.

So, why is it so popular?

The station, which started operations in 1913, is known for its distinctive architecture, interior design, and several works of art. It tells a story of great wealth, bespoke engineering, survival throughout time, and triumph.

7. The Metropolitan Museum of Art

 The Metropolitan Museum of Art

For art enthusiasts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, or simply the “MET”, offers a vast collection of old and modern art covering more than 17 departments. It is the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and, frankly, one of the most awe-inspiring places you can visit in the country.
