Shrub Disease Treatment

Most people don’t notice a problem until the damage is already done. Leaves start turning yellow. Branches look like they stopped growing. A section of the shrub goes completely brown while the rest of it seems fine. These aren’t random — they’re symptoms, and they usually mean something is going on below the surface.

North Eastern Tree, Shrub & Lawn Care has been treating shrub disease across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut since 1996. Our ISA-certified arborists can tell the difference between a fungal infection, a bacterial problem, a nutrient deficiency, and stress from environmental conditions — because the fix for each one is completely different.

What Shrub Diseases Look Like

A few of the most common signs that something is wrong:

  • Leaves turning yellow, brown, or black — especially if it’s spreading from one spot
  • White or gray powdery coating on the leaves (powdery mildew)
  • Spots, lesions, or unusual discoloration on stems or bark
  • Wilting that doesn’t improve after watering
  • Dead or dying branches in an otherwise healthy shrub
  • Cankers — sunken or discolored areas on the bark

Some diseases only affect specific shrubs. Boxwood blight, for example, is a serious fungal disease that can wipe out entire hedges in the Northeast if it isn’t caught early. Fire blight hits junipers and flowering ornamentals. Anthracnose shows up on a wide range of broadleaf shrubs, especially after wet spring weather.

If you’re seeing any of these signs, don’t wait. Early diagnosis is the difference between a treatment and a replacement.

How We Treat Shrub Disease

Every shrub disease treatment starts with a full inspection. One of our certified arborists walks your property, evaluates the affected plants, and identifies what’s actually causing the problem. We don’t guess.

From there, we build a treatment plan based on the specific disease and the condition of the plant. We use environmentally responsible, reduced-risk products — many of which are recognized by the EPA as safe enough to be exempt from standard regulations. If we can handle it organically, we will. We’re members of NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) and carry OMRI-reviewed products including horticultural oil, botanical insecticide oils, and insecticidal soap.

For severe cases, we’ll also give you a maintenance plan to prevent recurrence — because some diseases, especially fungal ones, will come back next season if conditions are right.

What Our Satisfied Customers Are Saying…

Frequently Asked Question

How do I know if my shrubs have a disease or just a pest problem?

Both can cause similar symptoms, which is why an arborist inspection matters. Pests often leave behind physical evidence — holes in leaves, webbing, sticky residue, or visible insects. Diseases tend to show up as discoloration, lesions, or rot. Sometimes both are present at the same time.

Can a diseased shrub be saved?

Often, yes — especially if you catch it early. The outcome depends on the disease, how far it’s spread, and the overall health of the plant. Our arborists will give you an honest assessment after the inspection.

Do you treat organic properties?

Yes. We offer naturally-based disease management programs and use OMRI-reviewed products for clients who prefer an organic approach.
