Lawn Weed Control Service

Weeds don’t show up because you’re doing something wrong — they show up because every lawn has gaps, and weeds are very good at filling them. Thin turf, compacted soil, bare spots from drought or grub damage — any of these give weeds an opening. The solution isn’t just pulling what’s there. It’s building a lawn that doesn’t give weeds a foothold to begin with.

North Eastern Tree, Shrub & Lawn Care provides lawn weed control services for residential and commercial properties across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. We combine targeted treatments with a longer-term approach — fertilization, overseeding, and soil health — so you’re not just treating weeds season after season.

Common Weeds We Treat

The Northeast has its own lineup of persistent lawn weeds. The most common ones we deal with:

  • Crabgrass — an annual grass that germinates in late spring and takes over thin turf fast
  • Dandelion — a perennial broadleaf that spreads aggressively if left untreated
  • Clover — thrives in low-nitrogen soil; shows up when lawns aren’t being fertilized properly
  • Ground ivy (creeping Charlie) — spreads through shaded areas and along borders
  • Nutsedge — a grass-like weed that’s often mistaken for regular grass but grows much faster
  • Broadleaf plantain — shows up in compacted soil and heavy-traffic areas

Different weeds require different treatments. Pre-emergent herbicides stop crabgrass before it germinates. Post-emergent treatments target established broadleaf weeds. Nutsedge needs specific chemistry that standard broadleaf products won’t touch. Getting it right matters.

Our Approach to Weed Control

We start with an assessment of your lawn — what weeds you have, how established they are, what’s driving their presence (compaction? low fertility? thin turf?), and what conditions will support the best results from treatment.

From there, we put together a program that addresses both the weeds you can see and the underlying conditions that are letting them grow. This typically includes:

  • Pre-emergent applications in early spring to prevent crabgrass and annual weeds
  • Post-emergent broadleaf treatments in spring and fall
  • Targeted spot treatments for persistent problem areas
  • Fertilization and overseeding recommendations to build turf density — because a thick lawn is your best long-term defense against weeds

For clients who prefer an organic approach, we offer naturally-based weed management programs using OMRI-reviewed products and cultural practices that improve lawn health without synthetic herbicides.

What Our Satisfied Customers Are Saying…

    Frequently Asked Question

When is the best time to treat for weeds?
It depends on the weed. Crabgrass pre-emergent should go down in early spring, before soil temperatures hit 55°F at a 4-inch depth — roughly April in most of our service area. Broadleaf weed treatments are most effective in fall when weeds are actively transporting nutrients to their roots. We time applications based on the specific weeds we’re targeting.
Will weed control hurt my existing grass?
Properly applied selective herbicides target weeds without harming established turfgrass. We use products approved for use on the grass types common in the Northeast and apply them at the correct rates. If you have a newly seeded lawn, we’ll adjust timing to protect the new grass.
Can you get rid of weeds organically?
Yes, with some caveats. Organic weed control is generally slower and requires more follow-up than conventional treatments. The most effective organic approach combines targeted natural herbicides with cultural practices — aeration, overseeding, and fertilization — to thicken the turf and reduce weed pressure over time. We’ll walk you through the tradeoffs.
