Lawn Restoration Services
Complimentary Lawn Assessment | Soil Testing | DEC-Licensed Applicators | 30 Years Family-Owned
Lawn restoration from North Eastern Tree, Shrub & Lawn Care brings a thin, patchy or weedy lawn back to thick, green health. We test your soil, fix what is wrong underneath, and grow new grass where the old grass gave up. Then we keep it healthy.
Lawn Restoration Done Right
Most bad lawns are not your fault. The problem is usually under the grass. Hard, packed soil. The wrong pH. No food for the roots. Weeds move in fast when grass is weak.
Throwing down more seed or more fertilizer rarely fixes it. The seed sits on top of hard ground. The weeds come right back.
We fix the cause, not just the look. We start with a soil test. Then we loosen the soil, plant new grass, feed it and keep weeds out. Step by step, your lawn fills back in.
One customer switched to us after 25 years with a landscaper: “Our lawn has never looked so lush, beautiful and dandelion free. It’s great to finally use trained, certified and knowledgeable professionals. Who knew it was a job landscapers shouldn’t do.”
Lawn Restoration Across New York, Connecticut and New Jersey
We restore lawns for homeowners in Westchester County, NY, Fairfield County, CT, Bergen County, NJ and nearby counties. Our home base is in Stamford, CT.
Lawns here face a lot. Big shade trees. Rocky soil. Hot, sticky summers. Cold, dry winters. Older yards with tired soil, and newer homes where builders left packed dirt under the sod. We have seen it all, and we know how to bring these lawns back.
Signs Your Lawn Needs Restoration
Thin or bare spots. Grass that keeps thinning out, even when you water, is a sign the soil needs help.
Weeds are winning. If dandelions, clover, crabgrass or creeping Charlie cover more ground than your grass, it is time to restore.
Hard, packed soil. If a screwdriver will not push into the ground, roots cannot either. Water runs off instead of soaking in.
Brown patches in summer. Round brown spots in hot, humid weather often mean lawn fungus.
Too much shade. Grass under big trees slowly fades away. The right seed and the right care can help. As arborists, we can also tell you if pruning would let more light in.
After a flood, construction or a hard year. Floods leave silt and packed soil. Construction leaves poor dirt under the sod. A dry summer or skipped care can set a lawn back too.
Organic Lawn Restoration That Starts With the Soil
Fast-acting fertilizer turns grass green for a few weeks. Then it fades, and the soil is no better than before.
We take a different path. Our organic lawn care uses carbon-based, OMRI-listed products that feed the soil itself. Healthy soil grows deep roots. Deep roots grow thick grass that holds up to heat, dry spells and weeds.
We will be honest: organic weed control is slower. It can take a season or two to win. If you want faster results, we also offer traditional and blended programs.
One customer said: “The products they use have improved the health of my soil and the lawn as well. It’s much greener and thicker than when I did it myself.”
Our Lawn Restoration Process
Here is how we bring a lawn back, step by step:
- Step 1. Free assessment and soil test: A technician walks your lawn and tests the soil for pH, food and packed ground.
- Step 2. Fix the soil: We correct the pH and add organic matter so roots can grow.
- Step 3. Control the weeds: We knock back weeds so new grass has room. We never kill weeds without planting grass, or the weeds just come back.
- Step 4. Aerate and overseed together: We pull small plugs of soil to open the ground, then plant new grass seed right away.
- Step 5. Feed the new grass: Organic-based feeding matched to your soil test helps the new grass root in.
- Step 6. Watch for problems: We check for fungus and other trouble and treat it early.
- Step 7. Keep it healthy: A seasonal lawn program (usually 5 to 6 visits a year) keeps your lawn thick for years.
When can you start? Any time of year. Most people call us in spring when they see the damage from winter. The best time to plant seed is late August to mid-October. If you start in spring, we can begin with the soil, feeding and weeds right away, and plan the seeding for the best window.
Core Aeration and Overseeding: The Heart of Lawn Restoration
Over time, feet, mowers and rain pack soil down tight. Air and water cannot reach the roots. Grass gets thin. Weeds fill the gaps.
Core aeration pulls out small plugs of soil. That opens paths for air, water and food. Then we overseed with cool-season grass seed made for the Northeast, like fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass. We match the seed to your sun and shade.
We always aerate and overseed together. Aerating without seed leaves open dirt for weeds. Seeding without aerating leaves seed sitting on hard ground.
What to expect: new grass pops up in 7 to 21 days. The lawn looks thicker in 4 to 6 weeks. It is fully grown in by the end of the next season. We will tell you exactly how to water.
Weed Control, Fertilization and Fungus Treatment
Lawn Weed Control
We stop crabgrass before it starts and treat dandelion, clover, ground ivy, nutsedge and plantain. Thick grass is the best weed control there is.
Lawn Fertilization
Organic-based feeding matched to your soil test. Fall feeding is the most important of the year.
Lawn Fungus Treatment
Fungus shows up as brown spots in hot, humid weather. We treat it fast. Tip: water before 2 or 3 PM, never at night.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lawn Restoration
What is lawn restoration?
Lawn restoration brings a thin, patchy or weedy lawn back to health. We test the soil, fix what is wrong, control weeds, aerate and overseed, and feed the new grass. Then a seasonal program keeps it healthy.
How long does it take to restore a lawn?
New grass comes up in 7 to 21 days after seeding. The lawn looks thicker in 4 to 6 weeks. A full comeback usually takes until the end of the next growing season.
When is the best time for lawn restoration?
You can start any time of year. The best time to plant seed is late August to mid-October, when the soil is warm and weeds are slowing down. If you start in spring, we work on the soil, feeding and weeds first.
Do I have to tear out my whole lawn and start over?
Most lawns do not need that. Fixing the soil, aerating and overseeding can bring back a lawn that looks pretty rough. If yours needs more, we will tell you honestly at your assessment.
Why do you always aerate and overseed together?
Aerating without seed leaves open dirt for weeds. Seeding without aerating leaves seed on hard ground where it cannot root. Together, they work.
Can you restore a lawn organically?
Yes. Organic care builds healthy soil, which grows thick grass. It can be a bit slower on weeds at first. We also offer traditional and blended programs if you want faster results.
Is lawn restoration safe for kids and pets?
We use mostly organic products, and our DEC-licensed applicators follow every label. Your technician will tell you when it is safe to go back on the lawn.
Do you mow?
No. We do not mow. We focus on making your grass healthy. Most of our customers keep their landscaper for mowing and use us for everything that makes the lawn thicker and greener.
