 Lawn Overseeding Service

A lawn that looked great five years ago can start to thin out over time — and it usually happens gradually enough that you don’t notice until there are real bare spots. Foot traffic, drought, heavy shade, grub damage, disease — any of these can weaken your turf. Overseeding is one of the most effective ways to bring it back.

North Eastern Tree, Shrub & Lawn Care provides lawn overseeding services for residential and commercial properties throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. We use high-quality grass seed varieties that are suited for the Northeast climate, and we pair overseeding with core aeration to give the seed the best possible chance of establishing quickly.

Why Overseeding Works

Grass plants don’t live forever. Even a healthy lawn is constantly losing older grass plants and relying on new growth to fill in. Over time, without overseeding, the turf density decreases — and thinner turf means more room for weeds to take hold.

Overseeding introduces new grass plants into your existing lawn. When done right — at the right time of year, with the right seed, after proper soil preparation — it thickens your turf significantly. A denser lawn crowds out weeds, handles drought better, and looks better year-round.

For cool-season grasses in the Northeast (fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass), the ideal time to overseed is early fall — late August through mid-October. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for germination, but the cooler air reduces competition from crabgrass and other warm-season weeds.

Our Overseeding Process

  • Lawn assessment — We evaluate your turf density, grass type, soil condition, and the extent of thinning before recommending a plan.
  • Core aeration — In most cases, we aerate before overseeding. This pulls small plugs from the soil, reducing compaction and creating direct seed-to-soil contact.
  • Seed selection — We choose grass seed varieties appropriate for your lawn’s sunlight conditions, soil type, and the look you’re going for.
  • Seeding — Seed is applied evenly across the lawn, with heavier application in bare or thin areas.
  • Post-seeding care guidance — We’ll tell you exactly how to water the lawn for the first few weeks to support germination.

When to Consider Overseeding

  • Your lawn has bare spots that aren’t filling in on their own
  • Turf density has declined noticeably over the past few seasons
  • Weeds are starting to dominate areas that used to be grass
  • Your lawn is recovering from grub damage, disease, or drought stress
  • You want to introduce a more shade-tolerant or drought-resistant grass variety

What Our Satisfied Customers Are Saying…

Frequently Asked Question

Can I overseed in the spring?
Fall is strongly preferred in the Northeast. Spring overseeding is possible but less effective — warm-season weeds like crabgrass will compete heavily with new grass seedlings in spring. If your lawn has winter damage or bare spots you need to address quickly, a light spring application can help, but the results will be better with a full fall program.
How long does it take to see results?
Most grass seed germinates within 7–21 days under good conditions. You’ll start to see noticeable thickening within 4–6 weeks of seeding. Full establishment of the new plants takes one full growing season.
Do I need to aerate every time I overseed?
Not always, but in most cases yes — especially if your soil is compacted. Aeration dramatically improves germination rates by improving seed-to-soil contact and making it easier for roots to establish.
